Do or Die Weekend for the Braves
The Philadelphia Phillies come in to town tonight to open a 3 game set against the red hot Atlanta Braves. The Braves offense has finally started showing up to games to give the pitching staff some run support the past month. Being 5 games back, 6 in the loss column in the NL East, with 48 games left to play, there is not much time left to make a move to get a playoff spot with several teams ahead of them in both the NL East and the Wild Card. Anything short of a 3 game sweep will put them in a huge hole.
The bats need to step it up again and get some runs on the board. And maybe throw in a golden shower while we are at it.
Adrian Beltre had a groin grabbingly good time
Seattle – Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre might miss the rest of the season after taking a hard one-hopper to his groin off the bat of a White Sox player Thursday night.
Manager Don Wakamatsu said the Gold Glove third baseman is out indefinitely, and might need surgery because of bleeding in a testicle. Beltre does not wear a protective cup because he says it’s uncomfortable.
If Beltre needs surgery, he could be out for an extended time. If there’s no surgery, he would need 10 days to two weeks to recover.
Beltre stayed in the game after the ninth-inning injury and scored the winning run in the Mariners’ 1-0 victory 14 innings.
“It hurt pretty bad,” Beltre said. “It was hurting me pretty much the whole game after that.”
Told that he was brave for continuing to play, he quipped: “I don’t know about brave. Maybe stupid.”
Ugh, I don’t want to hear the words ‘bleeding in a testicle’ ever again. Some people may say he’s an idiot for not wearing a cup and stupid for finishing the game up, but I am with Beltre here on this one – I wore a cup once playing third base in high school and had the worst game ever. It was uncomfortable, pinched, and just flat out sucked. I ended up playing the hot corner for the next couple of years without a cup, and never made an error. This is probably why Beltre is such a good fielder and two-time gold glove winner – he has to field everything cleanly to keep his boys from being destroyed. He’s from the Dominican Republic, so its not like they have cups down there – they probably use a milk carton or something for protection.
